Vehicle Wraps & Decals in Malaysia: A Cost & Care Guide for Fleet Owners

A vehicle wrap is the most photographed billboard your business will ever own. A delivery van running two routes a day across Johor is seen by an estimated 30,000 - 70,000 unique people every month — at a cost-per-impression no other channel can match. The catch is that a poorly executed wrap looks worse than no branding at all. Here is how to brief, budget and care for a vehicle wrap that earns its keep.

The Four Wrap Tiers

1. Vinyl Lettering Only (the entry tier)

Cut vinyl letters and a logo applied to door panels and the rear hatch. Cheap, fast, removable, and surprisingly effective for tradespeople and small service businesses. Lasts 3-5 years with reasonable care.

2. Partial Wrap (the value tier)

Printed vinyl panels covering 40-70% of the vehicle — typically the lower body, doors and rear, with the original paint visible above the beltline. Captures most of the visual impact of a full wrap at half the cost.

3. Full Wrap (the premium tier)

Every painted surface of the vehicle covered in printed vinyl. Maximum visual impact, complete brand control, and the option to revert to the original paint when the wrap is removed. The right choice for premium delivery fleets, ride-share branding, and high-visibility commercial vehicles.

4. Colour-Change Wrap (the lifestyle tier)

A solid-colour or textured vinyl wrap covering the entire vehicle, no graphics. Used by car enthusiasts to change colour without repainting. Functionally identical to a full wrap from a materials perspective.

Materials That Actually Last in Malaysia

Tropical heat, intense UV, and frequent rain are unforgiving on cheap vinyl. The materials matter:

• Cast vinyl (premium) — 3M, Avery or Hexis cast vinyl. 60-80μm thick, conforms to compound curves, 5-7 year outdoor life. The only material we use for full wraps.
• Calendered vinyl (budget) — 100-150μm thick, less conformable, 3-5 year outdoor life. Acceptable for flat panels and short-term promotional wraps. Not suitable for cars with strong body curves.
• Cast laminate — clear protective film applied over the printed wrap. Mandatory. Without it, UV will fade your prints in 12-18 months.
• Reflective vinyl — for safety markings, road-going trucks, and any vehicle that operates in low light. Reflects headlights for visibility.

What Goes Into the Cost

Vehicle wrap pricing is driven by three factors, in order of weight:

1. Vehicle size and complexity. A sedan is 8-12 hours of installation. A van is 2-3 days. A bus is a week. The vinyl is the same per square metre, but labour is the dominant line item.
2. Vinyl grade. Premium cast film costs 2-3x calendered film. For anything beyond a 12-month promotional wrap, premium pays for itself in service life.
3. Design complexity. A simple logo wrap on a flat panel installs in hours. A full photo-realistic wrap with edge-wrapping into door jambs is days of careful work.

Realistic Cost Ranges in Johor

• Vinyl lettering on a sedan — RM 250 - RM 700.
• Partial wrap on a sedan or hatchback — RM 1,500 - RM 3,500.
• Full wrap on a sedan — RM 4,500 - RM 8,000.
• Full wrap on an SUV or van — RM 6,500 - RM 12,000.
• Lorry side-curtain print — RM 3,000 - RM 7,000 depending on lorry size.
• Full bus wrap — RM 18,000 - RM 35,000.

Before You Approve the Design

1. Don't put your phone number small.

Your phone number should be readable from a vehicle in the next lane on a highway. That means at least 60mm letter height. If it's smaller, you've designed a logo, not a working ad.

2. Hero one message.

A vehicle is seen for 2-4 seconds at a time. One message — your business name, your service, your phone — is what sticks. Cluttered wraps with five competing messages communicate nothing.

3. Account for body lines and cut-outs.

The wheel arches, door handles, rear-view mirrors and badges all eat into your design. Get a model-specific template before designing — never design on a generic side-view illustration. We provide vehicle templates for every Malaysian-market van, lorry and SUV.

4. Verify with a print proof on actual vinyl.

Colours print very differently on cast vinyl than they appear on screen, and large-format printers shift hue over time without recalibration. A small printed sample on the actual material is the only way to know.

Care, Cleaning, and Removal

• Wash by hand with mild soap and a soft sponge. Avoid pressure washing within 24 hours of installation; after that, low-pressure rinses are fine.
• Avoid waxes and polishes on the wrap surface — they leave a hazy film that's nearly impossible to remove.
• Park indoors when possible. Direct sun is the single biggest enemy of vinyl life.
• Removal at end-of-life takes a few hours per vehicle and leaves no residue when the wrap was installed correctly with quality material. We perform removals on request.

For any fleet wrap above three vehicles, we install in our temperature-controlled bay at the Kulai studio rather than on-site — vinyl behaves more predictably indoors, and the finish is measurably better.
